Who is K&L Rumley Enterprises?

      Lee Roy Rumley first was involved in racing at local tracks surrounding Greensboro, NC with his brother Jimmy in the 1950’s. The car that Jimmy used to drive was a Chevy Coupe stock-car with the number 6 located on the driver’s side door. Since 1956 Lee Roy has owned and operated his team out of a modest garage in Greensboro, NC, sporting the #6. The team has been well-known in the Southern states in the racing industry and always been a competitive car among local tracks. It wasn’t until 1997 when the team started to travel outside the South to bigger race events. The pair has had drivers such as: Steve  Shaver, Steve Lucas, Booper Bare, and Randle Chupp over the many years of operation. The team had known Jonathan Davenport for numerous years prior to hiring him as their driver in 2014, and once he was a free agent there wasn’t any question about who they would want to steer their car for their remaining years as car owners.

       The K in K & L is Kevin Rumley, Lee Roy’s son, and as you can guess was brought up around the race team. In order to bring the race team to another level, Kevin decided to make a career out of motorsports and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to earn his Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering degree. Upon graduation Kevin gained a position with CV Products, a NASCAR & Motorsports parts company, where he worked as lead engineer for over 12 years. His most prized accomplishment while at CV would be his filed patent #7331319, Cam Hub Mounting Assembly. In the winter of 2012 while Kevin & Lee Roy were still racing part time mostly locally, he was approached by Longhorn Chassis which is owned by the NASCAR famed Labonte brothers (Terry & Bobby) to present him the opportunity to bring his combination of engineering and racing  background to help their racing operation. Over that winter Kevin completely redesigned their late model chassis, which is named Longhorn Chassis. Eventually the team owned by Kevin & Lee Roy was brought down to operate out of the Longhorn Chassis facility, and as a result have catapulted Longhorn Chassis to the hottest, most in-demand chassis currently in Dirt Late Model racing. In spring 2015 Kevin left his position at CV Products in order to concentrate on the race team full time with his father and Jonathan. It’s safe to assume that Kevin’s bold career move played a major role in the team’s success in 2015-16.

        After a many wins and a second place finish in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points standings in 2016 the K & L Rumley team decided to cease operations as team owners, for the time being. In 2017 Kevin founded Rumley Engineering, which is a motorsports engineering consulting business focused on component design and scientific data analysis​. It only took a couple years for the team to sit on the sidelines, as in early 2019 the “6 car” was brought back. In 2019 with a very limited schedule the team two three races, one with Mike Marlar and the others with Tim McCreadie (including the Firecracker 100). Due to COVID-19 the car didn’t make it out in 2020 until late August, but that outing was one for the record books. The K&L Rumley team was the car owner for the debut of Kyle Larson in his first dirt late model result, which of course resulted in him winning in his second start.

Been involved in motorsports since 1956. Countless wins and track championships. Team owner of the 2015 Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series championship car.
