ABOUT.

The iconic Rumley No. 6 has been a fixture on racetracks since the mid-1950s. The team began as a brother duo—Jimmy and Lee Roy Rumley—racing locally near their Greensboro, North Carolina shop. When Jimmy retired from driving, Lee Roy continued as a car owner, fielding entries for a long list of talented drivers throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.

In the 1990s, the next chapter began when Lee Roy teamed up with his teenage son, Kevin. The father-son duo began traveling to tracks across the Southeast, though racing remained a weekend hobby—Lee Roy worked full-time, and Kevin was still in school. Over the years, Rumley Racing fielded cars for notable names including Ray Williams, G.W. Garringer, Donald and Ray Tucker, Booper Bare, Petey Ivey, Randle Chupp, Steve Lucas, and Steve Shaver. Even NASCAR driver Brian Vickers took the wheel of the Rumley No. 6 during the 2009 Prelude to the Dream at Eldora Speedway.

In late 2012, Kevin Rumley was hired by Longhorn Chassis as a consultant to help redesign their chassis—a relationship that continues today. Kevin holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Carolina. You can learn more about his career at RumleyEngineering.com.

The team’s breakout year came in 2015, when they ran their first full-time national series schedule with driver Jonathan Davenport. The duo won multiple crown jewel events, earned over $700,000 in winnings, and captured the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship. That following year, Lee Roy Rumley was inducted into the Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame.

After a brief hiatus in 2017 and 2018, the team returned in 2019 with drivers Mike Marlar and Tim McCreadie—who delivered the team’s first Firecracker 100 win. In 2020, NASCAR star Kyle Larson jumped into a dirt late model for the first time with Rumley Racing. True to form, Larson won in just his second start, at Port Royal Speedway.

In 2024, the team expanded its driver roster to include Jonathan Davenport, Hudson O’Neal, and Ricky Thornton Jr. As of 2025, the Rumley No. 6 is running a part-time schedule with Hudson O’Neal behind the wheel at select events.
